Recyclable Materials FAQ

Questions about recycling in Knoxville? Wondering about hazardous waste removal? You came to the right place! We often get asked about the materials that are eligible for recycling. Here’s what you need to know:

+ Glass

You can no longer recycle glass in your curbside bin, because unlike the separated glass collected at the Recycling Drop-Off Centers, glass from the curbside recycling carts must travel down the sorting line to separate it from other recyclable materials. The glass often breaks into such small pieces during the sorting process that it becomes worthless.

You can bring glass to one of the city of Knoxville’s 5 recycling centers. See the green icons on the map above to find the nearest city drop-off recycling center.

+ Pizza Boxes

Yes, the whole box is recyclable even with grease stains. Just remove food crumbs and liners.

+ Lids on or off?

You are encouraged to keep the lids, bottle tops, etc. on your materials.

+ Plastic Grocery Bags

Never put thin plastic sheeting (grocery bags, plastic wrap, etc.) into your personal or recycling center bin. However, they can be recycled to the bag recycling receptacles at the grocery store.

+ Aluminum Foil and Pie Pans

No. Aluminum foil often contains too much food contamination for recycling centers to accept.

+ Disposable Coffee Cups

Yes, these can be placed in your curbside recycling cart or taken to a city recycling drop off.

+ Milk or Juice Cartons

Yes, these can be placed in your curbside recycling cart or taken to a city recycling drop off.
