Recyclable Materials FAQ

Questions about recycling in Knoxville? Wondering about hazardous waste removal? You came to the right place! We often get asked about the materials that are eligible for recycling. Here’s what you need to know:

+ Glass

You can no longer recycle glass in your curbside bin, but you can bring it to one of the city of Knoxville’s 5 recycling centers. See the blue icons on the map above to find the nearest city drop-off recycling center.

+ Pizza Boxes

Yes, the whole box is now recyclable even with grease stains. Just remove food crumbs and liners.

+ Lids on or off?

You are encouraged to keep the lids, bottle tops, etc. on your materials.

+ Plastic Grocery Bags

Yes, but only if you bring them back to the bag recycling receptacles at the grocery store. Never put thin plastic sheeting (grocery bags, plastic wrap, etc.) into your personal or recycling center bin.

+ Aluminum Foil and Pie Pans

No. Aluminum foil often contains too much food contamination for recycling centers to accept.

+ Disposable Coffee Cups

No. These contain both paper and a plastic coating, so they are a mixed product that cannot be recycled. Avoid disposable coffee cups by bringing your own travel mug when ordering coffee.

+ Milk or Juice Cartons

No. Cartons are lined with a waxy plastic coating and cannot be recycled in Knoxville.

+ Frozen Food Boxes

No. Frozen food boxes are lined with plastic to protect the paper box underneath from condensation. This mixed product cannot be recycled.
